PAN Peru Brings a New Library to the Amazon Region
Pan Peru is happy to announce the opening of its first community library in the Amazonian region of Peru last October. The library, located at a new school in Yapaz Bajo, Chanchamayo, marks our nonprofit’s 13th library dedicated to expanding educational resources for children, families and teachers in underserved areas.
Named after Peruvian novelist and poet José María Arguedas, the new library features nearly 2,000 books, printed materials and a mobile lending unit, serving over 350 residents in this remote Amazonian area.
With this latest addition, Pan Peru now covers the three regions of Peru: the coast, the Amazon rainforest and the Andes mountains — a major achievement for our organization’s mission of expanding educational opportunities in high-need areas across the country.
Equipping rural jungle students and their families with access to books and academic tools brings us one step closer to building a more inclusive future with opportunities for all.
In addition to providing educational materials, our new project aims to train local teachers in literacy strategies, establish a community-run library committee and offer take-home reading programs to encourage family engagement. Monitoring tools such as baseline evaluations, weekly reading reports and community satisfaction surveys, position the library to become a model for scalable, sustainable impact.
We will continue to work closely with educators and local leaders to monitor the library’s usage, expand its collection and explore digital access as part of its long-term plan.
